Having Fun Is So Important While EatingWhen I was setting my goals for this year, my main theme was around having fun. This is because I realised that even though I love my work, I wasn’t having enough down time, relaxation and fun. This is so important because if we’re not having fun then what is the point.

This definitely transfers over to eating. Being on a diet is not fun. Depriving and restricting yourself is not fun. Feeling guilty around food is not fun. However it is fun to be in control of how you are eating in a positive way. What I mean by that is that when you eat naturally or mindfully you are listening to your body’s natural instincts. Therefore when your body tells you its hungry you eat. You eat exactly what you feel like, you stop when you’ve had enough and then you move onto something else, preferably something that is FUN! You are totally in control, but you are not depriving or restricting yourself.

What you are doing is empowering yourself to choose exactly what is right for you at that time. In some instances it will be something healthy, in others it won’t. I get just as much pleasure out of a beautiful piece of pineapple as I do a piece of chocolate, but only if I decide I want the pineapple at that time. If someone told me I had to eat the pineapple instead of the chocolate then I would not enjoy it. But if I’m allowed to make that choice for myself more often than not I’d probably choose the pineapple.

I eat approximately 80% healthy food and 20% not and to me that is a perfect balance. Physically, I feel great because I eat predominantly healthy food. But emotionally I feel great too, because I am not depriving myself of my favourite foods. This means I do not crave them and therefore never binge on them.

A number of my clients haven’t enjoyed their food for several years. This is often because they were always on some sort of diet or constantly worried about their weight or body image. Once they know that they can eat whatever they want whenever they are hungry, the enjoyment starts to come back, because they can now choose what they want. They start to eat food they haven’t allowed themselves to have, often for years and eating becomes a joy again instead of a worry. Also, because they are mindful as they eat, they don’t overindulge or constantly crave the unhealthy options.

Therefore I encourage you to start to having fun with your food. I remember as a child with a mallow puff, I would break it over my head, pick the chocolate off, nibble the biscuit and suck the marshmallow. I loved it and I never had more than one because I got so much enjoyment out of it I was easily satisfied. If you inhale your food you won’t enjoy it and you won’t get satisfaction because you are not mindful or focused while you are eating it.

Bring the fun back by listening to and trusting your body. Eat for nourishment and not for comfort. Allow yourself to enjoy your favourite food without guilt and overindulging. Then you will find that eating will be a joy and not a burden.

Some folks may have occupations that keep them walking and moving while others are in jobs that are sedentary, keeping them tethered to a desk all day. In either case folks need to exercise. If your job requires movement throughout the workday, include 30 minutes of physical activity, to aid in reducing stress. For those of you that are bound to a desk, see if your employer will invest in a few walking workstations. It is a win-win, you get needed exercise and your employer will benefit from healthier employees.

Everyone should include 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week to get their heart rate up. If you are not active now, ease into an exercise program after checking with your health care provider to make sure there is no reason to restrict physical activity.

CHOOSE A HEALTHIER DIET

Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet; choose an assortment of colorful items. Sure we all have our favorite foods, but mix it up and try something that is new to you. For example if you just love tomatoes-choose yellow or purple hues in place of the traditional red sometimes. According to the United Stated Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) Americans consume about 1.5 cups of fruits and vegetables; that is not enough. The national nutrition guidelines recommend 2 to 3 cups a day. Include more whole grain and high fiber foods in your daily diet. Folks don’t eat enough fiber and most need to eat more. By increasing produce in your diet, you can increase fiber intake. Eat whole grain breads, more beans, legumes, brown rice, quinoa and nuts.

Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish. Keep an eye on portion size, which should be approximately 4 ounces. As for dessert, which too many of us want to eat first, choose items that are not overflowing with sugar. Look to fruit or Greek-style yogurt that you can enhance with berries, and a few nuts. If you want a prepared dessert, consider cutting the portion in half and saving a portion for another day.

As for beverages, make sure you drink plenty of water, avoid high-sugar drinks and consume alcoholic drinks in moderation. Recommended amounts of alcohol are one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men.

BAN SMOKING

This includes cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes and marijuana. Don’t smoke; smoking simply is not heart-healthy.

RELAX and REST

Learn to take a chill break, relax and do something you find enjoyable. Meditate, read a book, indulge in mindless television or enjoy a soothing bath. Relaxing helps manage stress, which will aid in heart health.

Get the sleep that you need. Adequate amounts of sleep allow your heart to rest and will lower your blood pressure. Sleep deprivation works against heart health-you will feel more stressed and crave higher calorie foods.

Lastly, getting too caught up with our body shape could have an adverse effect on how we feel about ourselves. We all know that the hourglass (for women) is the yardstick of the perfect body shape. Marilyn Monroe was widely considered to have the perfect hourglass figure with measurements of 36-24-34. So, when some of us realised that we fall short of the ideal hourglass, we feel out of shape. Worse yet, some of us have succumbed to the pressure and let it become a body image issue. This is not healthy to say the least.

Instead, what we want to take note of when it comes to dressing our body is to know what features and assets we have, what challenges and issues we want to address. Most of all, we want to be comfortable in our own skin and shape first. We need to recognise that the standards set out by the popular media and pop culture is unrealistic and it would be naïve to compare ourselves with it.
